The monastery Nienburg was a Benedictine monastery in Nienburg an der Saale in Salzlandkreis, Saxony- Anhalt.

History

The "New Castle " ( = Nienburg ) was built 930-950 On the area. With the aim to proselytize the then Sorbian population of the region, was laid in the year 975, which was founded in Thank Champ de Mars in resin 970 Benedictine Abbey in the castle. The remodeling work lasted over 30 years.

It was only on August 8, 1004, the abbey church survived until today was King Henry II consecrated in the presence, who was on campaign against the Poles. At the same time the city received the markets and mint coins. The monastery was declared emperor Otto II to a monastery Empire. It soon developed into one of the richest monasteries in the region. The monastery belonged numerous possessions and places, including Harzgerode, Niemi sealed and Lubben. They were, however, isolated scattered between resin and Lusatian Neisse. In 1871 the castle was sold to an industrialist, who converted the building into a malt factory. 1996 parts thereof were destroyed by a fire that was caused by children playing.

The thousand year old monastery church well preserved St. Marien and St. Cyprian of 1004 is one of the most important early Gothic buildings in central Germany. It belongs to the Evangelical Church of Anhalt and is used ecumenically today. The church is a station on the Romantic Road.
