Nieuw-Dijk

Nieuw- Dijk is a village in the municipality Montferland in the Dutch province of Gelderland. By 2005, Nieuw- Dijk belonged to the municipality Didam. The village has about 1500 inhabitants.

History

The area of Nieuw- Dijk was already inhabited in the Neolithic period, which bifaces, tools and other discoveries found since the late 19th century evidence, which are dated to the period around 2500-2000 BC. Beginning of the 18th century, there was on the face of the present village besides a few farms little else than oak and beech forest. From about 1720, the deforestation for the settlement began. By 1835, the number of households had increased to about 95; to 1910 doubled this number and 1947 there were 255 houses.

The Roman Catholic village church is dedicated to St Anthony of Padua. Your foundation stone was laid on September 27, 1910; It was consecrated on 28 May 1911. 1916, the primary school was opened; since the mid- 1920s also bears the name of the saint, Anthony School. 1921, the shooting club Schutterij St. Anthony, 1936, the football club VV Sprinkhanen ( "locusts ") was established, home club of the later Dutch football national player Ernie Brandts.
