Nigel North

Nigel North ( born June 5, 1954 in London ) is a British lutenist of historical performance practice.

Life and work

Nigel North began at the age of seven years learning the violin. Already with 10 years, he received a scholarship to the youth department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he studied until 1970 guitar. At the same time he began to learn the lute self-teaching. From 1971 to 1974 he was in the sound class by Diana Poulton at the Royal College of Music, where he also followed courses in classical guitar, violin and viola da gamba.

In the academic year 1974-1975 he devoted himself to historical performance practice and also taught in the sound class. In 1975 he became professor of lute at the Guildhall School, a position he held until 1996. In the period from 1993 to 1999 he was a professor at the University of Arts in Berlin. Since 1999 he is professor at the " Early Music Institute of Indiana University, Bloomington " USA. From 2005 to 2007 he taught lute at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
