Nik Zoricic

Nick Zoricic ( born February 19, 1983 in Sarajevo, SFR Yugoslavia Nikola Zoricic, † March 10, 2012 in Interlaken, Switzerland ) was a Canadian freestyle skier in the discipline and ski cross skier.

Biography

Born in Yugoslavia Zoricic emigrated at the age of five with his family to Canada and grew up in Toronto. As usual with Skicrossern, he was first an alpine ski racer. In December 1998, he started for the first time to FIS races and in the Nor- Am Cup. In the seasons 2003/ 04 and 2004/ 05, he took up a total of four World Cup slalom race, but was never able to qualify for the second round of the 30 best located. He sought in vain for several years to connect with the world leaders and moved in 2008 to freestyle skiing.

His debut in the Freestyle World Cup was Zoricic January 19, 2009 in Lake Placid, where he finished in 61st place. The first World Cup points he won on February 24 of the same year with 15th place in Branäs. In the 2009/10 season, he failed to qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver itself. The breakthrough came Zoricic in the World Cup season 2010/11. He was never worse than classified in eighth and scored on 7 January 2011 with second place in St. Johann in Tirol his first podium. A year later, on 15 January 2012 he was third in the World Cup race of Les Contamines.

Death

At the World Cup race on 10 March 2012 at Grindelwald, Switzerland crashed heavily Zoricic. He fell at the final jump off the track and crashed into the safety nets, where he suffered a severe craniocerebral trauma. After a 50 -minute resuscitation attempt, he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital in Interlaken.
