Nikola Eterović

Nikola Eterović ( born January 20, 1951 in Pučišća, Yugoslavia ) is a Curia, Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and a diplomat of the Holy See. Since 21 September 2013, is apostolic nuncio to Germany.

Life

Nikola Eterović entered the seminary of Split, and studied philosophy and theology. At the Pontifical Gregorian University, he received his doctorate. He received on 26 June 1977 Bishop Celestin Bezmalinović in the cathedral of Hvar the sacrament of Holy Orders. In 1977 he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome and earned a degree in missiology and in canon law.

On March 25, 1980 Eterović entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Ivory Coast, Spain and Nicaragua, as well as in the Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State. Pope John Paul II granted him on 22 February 1984 honorary title Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). On 25 March 1993 Nikola Eterović was appointed nunciature counselor of the Section for Relations with States, and was on 22 January 1996 by John Paul II the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness bestowed.

On May 22, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed Titular Archbishop of Siscia and appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on 10 July 1999 at St. Peter's Basilica; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Split - Makarska, Ante Juric, and the Bishop of Hvar, Slobodan Štambuk.

On 11 February 2004, he was named John Paul II to the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops. On 30 November 2009 Eterović opted to the titular Cibalae.

On September 21, 2013, Pope Francis appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Germany.

In addition to his Croatian mother tongue, he speaks Italian, French, English, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.
