Roman Catholic Diocese of Hvar-Brač-Vis

The Diocese of Hvar ( kroat. Hvarska Biskupija, latin Dioecesis Pharensis ( - Brazensis et Lissensis ) ) is a Roman Catholic bishopric and suffragan, which is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Split - Makarska in Croatia. The current bishop is Monsignor Slobodan Štambuk.

History

The island was settled in the 7th and 8th century AD by the Croats ( who came from the Neretva valley ).

By the 7th century, the islands of Hvar, Brac and Vis were the Archdiocese of Split - Makarska assumed. Only in 1144 the diocese of Hvar was built, which is also the bishop's throne is ( cathedra ). January 14, 1889, the territorial administrative unit of the diocese comprises the islands of Hvar, Brac, Vis, Šćedro and some smaller islands.

Hvar was early for a free borough, with the privileges of the independent episcopal election for the island of Hvar and Brač, to the community judges were chosen for the two islands. The island cathedral dates from the 7th century. The seen in the cathedral altar paintings come from Italian masters of the 16th century.
