Roman Catholic Diocese of Sisak

The Diocese of Sisak (Latin: Dioecesis Sisciensis, Kroat Sisacka Biskupija. ) Is a Roman Catholic diocese in Croatia with headquarters in Sisak. Current diocesan bishop of the diocese is Vlado Kosić.

History

Early Christian Archdiocese

In the area of present-day Archdiocese of Zagreb Archdiocese Siscia was in Roman times the territory of the Roman province of Pannonia Savia, presented their bishop in the 4th century St. Quirinus of Siscia ( kroat. Sveti Kvirin Sisački ). After the fall of Sirmium in 441, the archbishopric Siscia joined the Metropolis of Salona. In the time of the great migrations of the 6th / 7th Century went out the historical grown archbishopric. At the first Synod of Split in 925 attempt a start-up of the former Metropolia was undertaken. This project failed. In the 11th century the diocese was dissolved, as the Diocese of Zagreb was founded.

Titular

As of May 1999, Sisak was titular. The only titular bishop was Nikola Eterović (* 1951 in Pucisca; ≈ 1977 Priests of the Diocese of Hvar).

Modern-day diocese

The Catholic communities belonged until 2009 to the diocese or archdiocese of Zagreb. In a church historically very rare case, the titular been transformed into a diocesan diocese: The Diocese of Sisak was on 5 December 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. built with the Apostolic Constitution Antiquam fidem. The bishop's seat is located in the eponymous Croatian town of Sisak. On the day of the establishment of the Zagreb diocese Bishop Vlado Kosić was appointed the first bishop of the diocese.

The diocese is under the Archdiocese of Zagreb and there is one of four dioceses.

Patron saint of the diocese is the martyr Quirinus of Siscia ( kroat. Sveti Kvirin Sisački ), who was buried in Rome.
