Nikolskoye, Kamchatka Krai

Nikolskoje (Russian Никольское ) is the only village ( selo ) and the administrative center in Rajon Aleutski and the only settlement on scoring to the Russian Commander Islands Bering Island. It belongs to the region of Kamchatka and has 676 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Nikolskoje was founded in 1826 by the Aleutian Island Atka, which were brought by Russian fur traders on the Bering Island. Main livelihood of the population was mainly hunting fur-bearing animals such as sea otters or sea-dogs. Today the Bering Island is largely protected, so that the public service as well as some form of income for fishing.

Since the village was Preobraschenskoje on the neighboring island Medny abandoned in the 1960s, Nikolskoje is the only settlement on the Commander Islands. But she was not spared the exodus; so the number of inhabitants in 2002 was still 808, and in 1989 even 1365th
