Nil by Mouth is a British drama film from 1997 and the debut of actor Gary Oldman as a director and screenwriter. The film was produced in a collaboration between Douglas Urbanski and Gary Oldman.

Nil by Mouth depicts the life of a family of sub-layer shaped by social housing South East London. Apart Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke also the sister of Gary Oldman Laila Morse plays a major role.

The world premiere of Nil by Mouth was at the International Film Festival in Cannes, where he was nominated for the Palme d'Or and Kathy Burke won for her interpretation of Valerie with the Best Actor Award on 8 May 1997. As a result, he won many other awards including two BAFTA Awards and three awards at the British Independent Film Awards.

The official release date was October 10, 1997 in the UK (USA 6 February 1998). In Germany the film was not running in theaters and it has been published only as a VHS video in England.

The film received no or only a limited release youth because of its realistic and dramatic depiction of domestic violence and drug consumption and because of its explicit language in many countries.
