Nilde Iotti

Leonilde " Nilde " Iotti ( born April 10, 1920 in Reggio Emilia, Italy, † December 3, 1999 in Rome) was an Italian politician.

Biography

Nilde Iotti was elected in 1946 as the candidate of the Italian Communist Party ( Partito Comunista Italiano, PCI) for the first time a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ), to which it belonged until her death in 1999. In the following years she was a close associate and companion of Togliatti, the long-time general secretary of the PCI. She was a member of the Central Committee of the PCI.

In 1979, she was also a member of the 1st European Parliament and occupied this position until the end of the parliamentary term in 1984.

In 1979 she was also elected as President of the Chamber of Deputies and held the office of President of Parliament held until 1992. She was the first woman in Italy who held such a high office of the constitution.
