Nils-Aslak Valkeapää

Nils- Aslak Valkeapää ( born March 23, 1943 in Enontekiö, Finnish Lapland, † 26 November 2001 in Espoo, Southern Finland ), on Sami also known as Áillohaš or Áilluhas, artist name Ailu was a Sami writers, musicians, artists and actors.

He spent much of his life in Käsivarsi, near the Swedish border, but also lived a long time in Skibotn in Norway. He was in his lifetime as the Sami personality best known internationally, even if subsequently the singer Mari Boine has achieved similar or even greater notoriety. Although Valkeapää came in a family of traditional reindeer - breeders to the world, but trained as a primary school teacher. In addition to his artistic work, he was also active politically for the concerns of seeds and other indigenous communities. Nils- Aslak Valkeapää died in late 2001 after a long haul flight from a pulmonary embolism.

Artistic creation

The Sami tradition of Joik singing took in his musical as well as in his artistic and literary creation a central place. He established his own artistic reputation as Joik interpreter. In the 1960s, young seeds looking for their cultural roots and Valkeapää was one of the most prominent representatives of this new generation of Joikern. His first recordings, Jojkuja of 1968, contained " modernized " joik.

Valkeapeää wrote the music for the internationally acclaimed film Pathfinder (English Alternative title Revenge of the track finder; Ofelas Sami, Norwegian Veiviseren ) from 1987, written and directed by Nils Gaup. He also played the role of siida - isit. He was the first secretary of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples (World Council of Indigenous Peoples ). In this position, he was a source of inspiration, not only for Sami artists, but also for members of indigenous peoples around the world. He has published eight collections of poetry. One of his most famous, inspired by Anders Fjellners The Sons of the Sun, is Beaivi áhčážan, which was translated into English, among others, under the title The Sun, My Father.

In Germany Valkeapää In 1993, during the international focus on Finland at the Dance and Folk Festival in Rudolstadt in Thuringia. Three years later, in 1996, he suffered a serious car accident which broke his artistic work largely because he then suffered from severe memory impairment.
