Nils Christie

Nils Christie ( born February 24, 1928 in Oslo) is a Norwegian criminologist. Until his retirement, he taught as a professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Oslo.

Nils Christie is, together with Thomas Mathiesen and Louk Hulsman of the most important representatives of the abolitionist movement. In his books he criticizes punishment, criminal law and penal system.

In 2001 he received the Fritt Ord Award, which is awarded for merits in terms of freedom of speech.
