Thomas Mathiesen

Thomas Mathiesen ( born October 5, 1933) is a Norwegian sociologist law.

Mathiesen studied until 1955 Sociology at the University of Wisconsin ( BA degree ) and acquired in 1958 the MA ( Major: Sociology, Minor subjects: Psychology and Social Anthropology ) at the University of Oslo. In 1965 he received his doctorate just there. Since 1972 he is Professor of Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo (emeritus 2004).

He was a visiting professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara (1967) and Berkeley (1975 ), at the University of Tromsø (1980 ), at the University of Warsaw (1988) and at the University of Bremen ( 1988).

Thomas Mathiesen counts together Nils Christie and Louk Hulsman of the most important representatives of the abolitionist movement. His major work, " The politics of abolition " (Oslo 1974) in 2014 appear in an expanded edition.

Mathiesen published in Norwegian and English, his works have been translated into Swedish, Danish, German, Italian and Spanish and published in China.
