Nils Økland (musician)

Nils Økland ( born January 7, 1961) is a Norwegian violinist ( Hardanger fiddle) and composer who works in the field of neo-folk, electronic, experimental and jazz music.

Life and work

Økland is the brother of guitarist and trumpeter Torbjørn Økland. He played in the 1980s with the formations Løver og Tigre ( 1983), Balkansemblet ( 1984-1995 and again in 2005 ) and in a duo with jazz bassist Bjørnar Andresen (1986). He worked in the 1980s in the field of folk and rock music, including with Bent Erlandsen 's Cafe Ensemble, Anne Grete Preus ( Fullmåne, with Nils Petter Molvaer ), the formation deLillos ( Hjernen He Alene; 1989). In 2009 he played in an improvising trio with pianist / harmonium player Sigbjørn Apeland and drummer Øyvind Skarbo the album in 1982, followed by a duo album in 2011 with Sigbjørn Apeland, Lysøen: Hommage à Ole Bull (ECM ), as a tribute to the violinist and composer Ole Bull ( 1810-1880 ).

Økland also participated in recordings of Christian Wallumrød ( A Year From Easter, ECM 2004), Helene Bøksle ( Elverhøy 2006), Alf Cranner ( Som En Rose: Alf Cranner Tolker Robert Burns, 2004), the folk-jazz trio NBB ( A Song Frå dei Utsunge Stunder 2005, Berit Opheim and Bjørn Kjellemyr ), David Rothenberg ( Ürgne Kaja (Primal echo ), 2007 ) and the experimental band by Robert Jürjendal, Petri Kuljuntausta & David Rothenberg (3 Corners of the World, 2008), and also in Benedicte Maurseth, Knut Hamre, Kari Bremnes, Karoline Krüger and Hans Fredrik Jacobsen. As head of ** Ole Bull Akademiet Økland organized concerts in the Concerts Norway program.
