Nils Torvalds

Nils Torvalds ( born August 7, 1945 in Ekenäs ) is a Finnish politician of the Swedish minority. He belongs to the Swedish People's Party ( sfp ). His eldest son is Linus Torvalds, the creator of the computer operating system kernel Linux.

Life

Nils Torvalds, son of the poet and journalist Ole Torvalds, attended the law school of the University of Helsinki. He worked as secretary of the association of freedom fighters in Finland and as a carpenter at the Finnish Cable Factory, which was to become the Nokia Group later. From 1973 to 1980 he was editor of the Arbeiter-Zeitung Enhet. This activity, however, he interrupted for two years to study economics at the Social Sciences Institute in Moscow.

From 1980 to 1982, Torvalds belonged to the municipality of Espoo. During this time he also worked as a freelance journalist. In 1982 he moved to the Finnish Broadcasting Yleisradio or round Radion. At first he was a journalist in the foreign desk, in 1987, he led the Swedish-language radio news, in early 1990 he became chief of the Swedish-language news. From 1995 to 1999 he was a correspondent in Moscow from 2000 to 2004 Washington, DC From January 2005, he worked on historical documentaries. This activity, he went up to his retirement in September 2008.

After leaving Yleisradio, Torvalds new tasks applied to. He was from 2007 to 2009 Chairman of the Swedish disability association in Finland and was until 2011 Chairman of the delegations for international human rights. In 2008 he was deputy chairman of the Swedish People's Party in Finland, he led this office until 2011. Also in 2008, he moved into the Helsinki City Council. Mid-2012 he became a member of the European Parliament after the previous sfp MP Carl Haglund had resigned from his position.

Nils Torvalds was married twice and is the father of five children.

Torvalds is a member of the board of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.

He is Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Fisheries. He is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. As a deputy, he is in the Budget Committee, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, the Delegation to the Parliamentary Cooperation Committee EU-Russia and the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan.
