Nimustine is a cytostatic agent from the group of alkylating agents and nitrosoureas.
Production
For the synthesis of nimustine starts from 2- chloroethyl isocyanate and consists of 4 - amino-5- aminomethyl -2- methylpyrimidine to the urea derivative, the nitrosating achieved with hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite.
Pharmacology
Effect
Nimustine changing the structures of the DNA chemically and prevents in this way, the cell division.
Application
Nimustine is used as a medicine in the fight against cancer. As is usual with other nitrosoureas, nimustine crosses the blood -brain barrier and is therefore particularly suitable for the treatment of brain tumors.
The big advantage over other nitrosoureas is that it does not damage the lungs.
Side effects
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Delayed bone marrow damage
- Mucosal inflammation
