Nioro du Sahel

Nioro du Sahel is a place in the region of Kayes in western Mali with about 33,486 inhabitants. ( Census 2009)
To the town has a small airport Aéroport de Nioro.
Location
Nioro du Sahel is located 241 km from Kayes and 443 km ( by road) northwest of the capital Bamako.
History
Nioro was founded was called in the 16th or 17th century by a slave who Diawandé, and reached its peak in the 18th century, when it was the capital of the Bambara kingdom of Kaarta. The place was a bedeutendenes trading center between the upper Senegal River and the Sudan.
The Tukulor and conquerors Al- Hajj Omar came over in the early 1850s Kaarta and forced the conversion of the kingdom to Islam. He left in 1854 built a large mosque in Nioro. In the 1920s Nioro became the center of Hamālīya, a branch of the Order of Tidschaniyya. 1936 changed the followers of the Order, which are also called Hamallisten their Qiblah and prayed on a search Nioro, which they called their Mecca.
