Nipple (plumbing)

A nipple is a short tube connecting piece with the pipe size. It thus represents the counterpart to a sleeve dar. Depending on the connection technology and material, a nipple or two smooth or with external thread.

Very short nipple with two identical ends are also called Double nipple. While in tubes made of steel, brass or gunmetal, the nipples are produced as prefabricated fitting industrially, they are manufactured in stainless steel, copper or plastic pipes as a transitional Nipple to other pipe systems because of short pipe pieces can easily be produced locally. A threader manufacturing nipples with some effort, is also possible for steel pipes to be screwed.

The combination of a nipple on one side having a sleeve on the other side is referred to as fitting the sleeve, the sleeve fitting, paragraph nipple or male adapter. Nipples, which have a nominal diameter change are called reducing nipple.

Applications range of applications in aerospace to industrial and commercial systems to the domestic plumbing sector. In the installation technique nipples are usually not provided with metric threads but with Whitworth pipe thread. As a media gases, liquids and granulated solids are transported.

According to their application, they are available for different nominal sizes and pressure ratings.
