Nir Oz (Hebrew ניר עוז, German pasture of force) is a secular kibbutz in southern Israel in the north-western Negev desert. It covers 20,000 dunams of land and counts 348 inhabitants ( 2006). The kibbutz located 25 km southwest of the town of Sderot near the Gaza Strip and part of the Eshkol Regional Council. Nir Oz was established as a Nahal settlement on October 1, 1955, and two months later recognized as a kibbutz within the association Kibbutz Artzi.

Economy

The kibbutz operates agriculture. In recent years, Nir Oz became a major growing region for Israeli asparagus for export. Next to it is in Nir Oz a factory that manufactures paints and waterproofing materials.

Rocket attacks

Due to its proximity to the Gaza Strip was Nir Oz frequent target of Palestinian rocket attacks. In 2008, the Israeli army asked the kibbutz to retract his crops only at night, so as to reduce the risk of attacks. On 4 June 2008, fired from the Gaza Strip mortar shell hit the paint factory, killing one worker and four others were injured. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.
