Nirex

Nirex ( Nuclear Industry Radioactive Waste Executive) is an organization founded by the British government in 1982, which is to deal with the disposal and specifically the disposal of radioactive waste in the UK. 1985 Nirex was reconstituted as the " United Kingdom Nirex ". In July 2003 the government announced a package of reforms, which provides, inter alia, the total independence of Nirex by the industry.

Shareholders of Nirex, the waste producers, ie British Energy, Magnox Electric, British Nuclear Fuels and AEA Technology. Funding is provided by the four major waste producers and the Ministry of Defence (MOD ). The main task of the Nirex is developing a deep geological repository for low and intermediate level radioactive waste.

1991 Nirex was named as a candidate site for such a repository at Sellafield. To explore the geology of an underground research laboratory should be built in the rock. In March 1997, however, Nirex announced that the rock laboratory will not be built. Preceded the decision was the concern expressed by the UK Environment Minister believes the project will not be pursued because of inadequate planning and the impact on the natural beauty of the Lake District. Thus also the repository was no longer to realize itself.

In October 1999 the government announced a comprehensive public participation in the development of an overall strategy for the disposal of radioactive waste participation, the 2007 should lead to a decision on the preferred disposal options.
