Nirvana (British band)

Nirvana is an English psychedelic pop band of the 1960s.

Band History

The group was founded by bassist and singer Patrick Campbell - Lyons, who played in various rhythm-and - blues bands since the early 1960s. In 1966 Campbell - Lyons with songwriter and pianist Alex Spyropoulos and guitarist Ray Singer cooperate. Together with bassist Brian Henderson and cellist Sylvia Schuster formed the trio the original cast of Nirvana.

After the musicians were first for the small label Kassner Music under contract, in 1967, the move to Iceland Records. At the same time came Michael Cole on flugelhorn and violin for the band. The sound of the group is solid and then contemporary pop with string arrangements and occasional psychedelic effects. On stage, the group showed in silk caftans dressed and played concerts with other Iceland Treaty artists such as traffic or Spooky Tooth.

The first two singles Tiny Goddess and Pentecost Hotel (both 1967 ) had no commercial success, but could as well as the debut album Story of Simon Simopath published in the same year reap positive critic voices and the group gain a certain reputation. The third single Rainbow Chaser (1968 ) became a Top 40 hit. The success may sometimes be due to a spectacular television appearance in France, during which the group ( with the directive, " as psychedelic as possible to look " ) afforded three songs and was meanwhile doused by Salvador Dalí with color.

Because of the symphonic elements of Nirvana songs the band played could not be adequately presented live once, so that in future largely renounced appearances. But that there was no more need for a fixed main cast, so that the group was reduced to Campbell - Lyons and Spyropoulos with changing studio musicians. In this way, the next two singles Girl emerged in the park and all of us (1968). All of us should have a greater awareness as the theme song of the movie The Touchables. In the same year followed by the sixth single Wings of Love and the album All of us, then the single Oh! What a performance. Although the group halfway successful, and the third album To Markos was 3 already produced finished, canceled the contract with Iceland Records in 1969. Campbell - Lyons and Spyropoulos, however, managed to make selling album of Metromedia (in the U.S. ) and Pye (in England).

Patrick Campbell - Lyons worked from 1970 as a producer for the label Vertigo Records and took in that time two albums, which also appeared under the name Nirvana: Local Anaesthetic (1971) and Songs of Love and Praise (1972). Alex Spyropoulos devoted himself meanwhile several other projects before the duo in four years of work, the composition Nirvana Musical Blood drawn up, from which the song Two of a kind appeared in 1986 as a single in England and France. Appeared in 1988, two more singles with new compositions: Black and White and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Since 2006, the two founders work sporadically again on joint projects.
