Nitro blue tetrazolium chloride (NBT ), a quaternary ammonium compound is a di - tetrazolium salt and redox dye.
Properties
By reducing the di- tetrazolium salt is first formed a red mono- formazan dye. Upon further reduction, a blue di- formazan dye formed.
Use
In biochemistry NBT in combination with 5 -bromo -4-chloro -3- indoxyl phosphate ( BCIP ) for sensitive detection of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (AP ) is used. In medicine used NBT for diagnosis of chronic granulomatous disease.
