Nitronium tetrafluoroborate is a chemical compound. Is the tetrafluoroborate salt of the nitronium ion.
Representation
The salt may be prepared by reaction of anhydrous hydrofluoric acid with boron trifluoride and dinitrogen pentoxide in nitromethane.
Use
Nitronium tetrafluoroborate is used as a reactive reagent for nitration of aromatic compounds. Nitrations run with this salt better and under milder conditions than with the conventional protocol for the nitration, in which nitronium prepared in situ from nitric acid and sulfuric acid. It nitrated benzene to nitrobenzene and 2,6- Dibromopyridine itself.
