Nizampatnam ( Telugu: నిజాంపట్నం Nijāmpaṭnam [ nidʒa mpʌʈnʌm ː ] also Petapolly, Pettipolle ) is an Indian port city in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. It is located in the delta of the river Krishna. Here was the first trading post of the Dutch East India Company (VOC ) on the Coromandel Coast.

The city is only little from the sea, which means that drinking water is often contaminated by sea water.

History

In 1608, the Dutch established a trading post here. Already on 26 August 1611 was followed by British traders with the ship Globe, under Captain Antony Hippon. They erected here in 1621 from a fixed base, but was abandoned in 1657. The Dutch left the city in 1688, a few years later, in 1697, the British came back. From 1753 it was part of French India, but in 1765 went again into the sphere of influence of the British East India Company.
