Features

The wingspan of the butterfly is 38 to 45 millimeters, whereas the females with 39 to 45 mm are slightly larger on average than males (38 to 40 mm). The ground color of the forewings varies from light gray to ocher over brown, often with a reddish or purplish tinge. Ring and kidney blemish are not clearly marked. The underside of the forewing is black in color from the wing base to the shaft line. The black box ends into the orange-brown Saumfeld in finger-like or pointed projections between the veins. On the hind wing upper side of the inner edge of the edge binding comes almost at right angles to the leading edge. From there, draw only a few or no black scales towards the black scales on the wing base.

The caterpillar is light brown to light brown gray. The back shows a narrow, bright line of the back and U- to V - shaped back drawings. Young caterpillars (L2 to L4 ) have 3 to 5 on the segment in the middle of the back of dark spots.

Similar Species

The moths of Janthe - Bandeule can not be reliably differentiated from butterflies of Janthina - based Bandeule the front upper wing surface. In N. janthe the black edge binding on the top of the hind wings is usually narrower than in N. janthina. The inner edge of the edge binding meets with N. janthe almost perpendicular to the front edge. From there, draw only a few or no black scales towards the black scales on the wing base. In contrast, the inner edge of the binding proceeds at N. janthina usually oblique, rarely almost perpendicular to the front edge. The black squamation can last up to the wing base. On the underside of the forewing black midfield is to Saumfeld out much sharper limited. Frequently rounded up black tipped projections between the cores are formed. In adult caterpillar of Noctua janthe the U- to V -shaped drawing elements are on the back clearly designed as in N. janthina. The younger caterpillars (L2 to L4) of N. janthe have in the middle of the back on the 3rd to 5th segment dark spots, which are absent in N. janthina crawler same stages.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is in Northwest Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) and spread throughout Western Europe. In the east it occurs up to and including Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, western Poland.
