Nodicia de Kesos

The Nodicia de Kesos (also Documento de Kesos, " cheese message " neuleonesisch documentu de queisos, neukastilisch documento de quesos ) is the oldest known Spanish document which was written not in Latin, but in a local dialect.

The text is an inventory list of the cheeses, the santos Justo y Pastor was written in Rozuela to León by a monk in the Monasterio de los. Stylistically, the language used is far from legal Latin, which was used for most documents of the time, it repeated many word groups and the Nodicia looks very spontaneous and free written down.

The document is in the image of the language used at that time, as she was also spoken. All other sources of that time give the literary language used again, the Latin. The language of the document corresponding to the then evolving dialect in the Kingdom of León and may therefore neither the present nor the Castilian Asturian be attributed.

The original is kept in the archives of the Cathedral of Leon as Manuscrito 852v.
