Nohant-Vic

Nohant -Vic is a commune with 483 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Indre in the Centre region.

  • Maison de George Sand - The end of the seventeenth century for the Governor of Vierzon built property was acquired in 1793 by Madame Dupin de Francueil, the grandmother of the writer. George Sand spent her childhood and youth in Nohant -Vic and there wrote a large part of their work. Among her guests at Nohant included Franz Liszt and Marie d' Agoult, Balzac, Chopin, Flaubert, and the painter Delacroix, who had a studio there. The property is now owned by the state and is maintained by the National Monument management.
  • Frescoes by Vic - The town of Vic ( from the Latin vicus ) is Gallo- Roman origin. The settlement was probably Christianized early and was since the Gregorian reforms in 1100 to the powerful Benedictine abbey Déols. The small parish church Saint -Martin was at the time of a simple nave and a rectangular choir. In the early 12th century, then was added the semi-circular apse and the southern side chapel. 1849 frescoes were discovered in the 12th century under the whitewash. The paintings cover both sides of a wall between the nave and choir, the walls of the choir as well as the walls and ceiling of the apse. The picture cycle, the main theme of " Fall and Redemption of the human race ." On the wall of the nave is enthroned Christ, and at his feet is located in a medallion the mystic lamb. On the Cross on the right wall sun and moon are shown.

  • Marie- Aurore de Saxe (1748-1821), daughter of Moritz of Saxony (1696-1750), who bought the estate in Nohant in 1793.
  • Aurore Dupin, known as George Sand (1804-1876), granddaughter of the former, spent part of her life at Nohant.
