Nokia Pop-Port

The Nokia POP -PORT was introduced by Nokia 2003-2007 proprietary hardware interface for wired connection to external equipment to a mobile phone as well as to the data synchronization with PC.

Until the introduction of pop- ports there were at Nokia - as well as rival producers - little continuity in the accessory connections. On the mobile phone connectable devices such as hands-free, headset or data cable not fit for another model mostly. Although the accessories had not evolved as the mobile phone, it had to be bought again when changing the mobile phone because of purely mechanical connector incompatibility. According costly was this circumstance for the customer, this was for the dealer big expense for the Sortimentierung.

For data communication with the PC the Pop-Port connects with older models, the RS232 signal lines for newer devices with connection to the Universal Serial Bus (USB). In addition, the Pop-Port serves as an interface for Nokia not publicly documented Accessory Control Protocol ( ACI) for bidirectional communication with any accessories, such as the answer key of a headset or connect an external digital camera. In a few models of TV-out via the Pop-Port Enhanced by Control Interface ( ECI) has been realized. Accessories without its own battery can be powered through the connection port with power from the battery of the mobile phone. The use of pop - ports was not enforced for the power supply of the mobile phone at the expense of coaxial consistently used in Nokia with 3.5 mm or for newer devices, 2 mm outside diameter.

Although the Pop-Port is equipped with a pin for the power supply of the mobile phone or battery charge, no USB data cables are available that would provide the mobile phone via the Pop -Port data connection. Instead, USB data cables are offered as original equipment for connection to the coaxial power supply socket, in which charging current from the USB host -related, but is brought out separately with a second plug. Nokia does not document with which charging current loaded here. Unlike the equipment of such data cable associated with a power supply plug, not everyone can USB host such a high power supply as the power supply associated with the mobile phone, and then only by special negotiation with the USB host controller.

The Pop-Port Analog Audio ( and video) was replaced by standards-compliant plug and for data transmission ( and power ) by standard USB connector, which Nokia devices increasingly equipping in addition or alternatively to the Pop-Port since 2006. New Nokia mobile phones are increasingly equipped with a Micro- USB port.

The term POP -PORT has been registered by Nokia Corporation Finland on 3 September 2002 as a brand (United States Patent and Trademark Office, Serial Number 78160116 ).
