Headset (audio)

A headset (Eng. headset, headset or headphone set) is a combination of headphone and microphone that allows a two-way communication ( listening and speaking). In German-speaking the English name headset had, as in similar cases of technical innovations, initially enforced. Today, the German terms list more and more search results and suggest a more frequent use.

With its technical components of a headset performs the same tasks as a telephone handset. The advantage lies in the freedom of both arms. In particular, when working at the computer, to laptops, to PDAs, or in connection with a mobile phone to headset therefore become increasingly more popular. Conducive is probably also the low price.

In connection cable there is often a control for the volume. For professional solutions (eg call centers), it is often possible to mute the microphone by pressing a button.

Use headsets usually an electret microphone that requires the operating current must be supplied to him by means of remote power supply, what happens, for example, via a jack socket of a computer.

Connection

Phones

In connection with phones these compounds are rather unusual. They embark on a variety of terminals, such as RJ -11, SMX (eg SM1, SM2 - Siemens ), AEI, DHSGand EHS. Often located in the middle of the cable called a QD connector (short for " Quick Disconnect " or "Quick Detachable ").

Mobile phones

For mobile phones, the connections of the different manufacturers are usually not compatible with each other. The most common are:

  • 2.5 mm jack - eg Motorola V- series
  • N1 - Nokia: 1100, 2100, 2300, 3210, 3310, 3330, 3410, 3510, 3650, 3660, 5210, 5510, 6510, 6600, 7650, 8210, 8310, 8850, 8890, 8910, N -Gage (2, 5 mm jack with four contacts )
  • N2 - Nokia: 5110, 6110, 6150, 6210, 6250, 6310, 6310i, 7110
  • N3 - Nokia: 3100, 3200, 3300, 5100, 5140, 6100, 6220, 6230, 6610, 6650, 6800, 6810, 6820, 7200, 7210, 7250, 7600, 7700
  • SM1 - Siemens: A35, A36, A40, A50, A25, C35, C45, M35, M50, ME45, MT50, S25, S35, S45, SL42, SL45
  • SM2 - Siemens: A55, A57, A60, A62, A65, A70, A75, AX75, C55, C60, C62, C65

Moreover, there is the Bluetooth headset.

Computer

Wired

A simple headset jack two, one for speaker and microphone, connected. With the computer so that it can be connected directly to mobile phones an appropriate adapter is often necessary.

Surround sound headsets (so-called hands-free devices ) are connected to either jack to the sound card or via USB to the PC. In the variant with sound card has three connectors must be connected to the inputs of the sound card. In each case, a plug is used for the front speakers, for bass and center speaker as well as for the rear speakers. Of course, such a solution the sound card must support a surround sound reproduction.

A more expensive version has a USB plug for connection to a computer. These devices have a built- digitization, which improves voice quality and makes an analog input in the computer superfluous.

Another variation amplifies the bass perception by means of vibrations of the ear cups. The required energy is drawn from batteries, an AC adapter, or for use on the computer from the USB port.

Wireless

Modern originating from the mobile wireless Bluetooth headsets can now be operated easily on the PC. To this end, this requires an integrated or retrofitted using a USB stick as well as a Bluetooth hardware installed Bluetooth software stack (software suite). Depending on the headset design are then two more on the PC under " Sounds and Audio Hardware" selectable functions are available, these are:

  • Bluetooth Advanced Audio A2DP, Bluetooth AV audio ( headphones for classical music playback )
  • Bluetooth SCO audio ( telephony )

Both functions can be used simultaneously, switches when an incoming VOIP call to the PC Bluetooth software a AD2P music playback mute. While only one headset can be defined for telephony, to plug in several AD2P music reproducing headphones with a Bluetooth enabled PC. Eg Some headsets also have function keys that can be assigned to a PC software, so is the answer a Skype call directly by pressing a button on a Bluetooth headset possible (requires additional software). In the telephony sector, the additional EHS ( Electronic Hook Switch ) functions is achieved. More and more spread also forDHSG interface ( Wireless headsets set ), both on the headset as well as on phone side.

A lack of Bluetooth headsets on the PC has long been their poor music playback quality. This was not due to the Bluetooth transmission, but by their original purpose for telephony. There are now on the market Bluetooth ( AD2P ) headset (headphones) which also allow for excellent music reproduction - quality addition to the wireless VOIP telephony.

Some wireless headsets use the DECT standard, with a high claim to the acoustics with CATiq. These are mainly intended for telephony, Opposite Bluetooth offers a greater range and therefore the user greater flexibility since it depending on the model, producers and environment in which the headset is used, can remove up to 150 feet from the base station, without the connection being stopped. Some DECT headsets are also compatible with the CAP and can be paired directly with a base station. Some models konnektieren addition to the regular phone via a USB connection with your PC.
