Nolina bigelovii

Nolina bigelovii is a species of the genus Nolina in the family of asparagus plants ( Asparagaceae ). English common names are " Bigelow 's Bear Grass" and " Bigelow Nolina ".

Description

Nolina bigelovii is derived making with a height of 1 to 3 m. It is rhizomatös. The variable, stiff, bright green to blue -colored leaves are 100 to 150 cm long and 10 to 50 mm wide. The leaf margins are finely serrated when young, old specimens are fibrous.

The inflorescence is 0.7 to 1.3 m tall, irregularly arranged branches. White to cream-colored flowers are 2 to 4 mm long and 1 to 2.5 mm wide. The flowering period extends from April to June.

The maturity in the round woody capsule fruits are 8 to 12 mm long and in diameter. The brown, ovoid to oblong seeds are 2.5 to 3.5 mm long.

Nolina bigelovii is hardy to minus 5 ° C.

Distribution and systematics

Nolina bigelovii is common in the U.S. states of California, Nevada, Arizona, and in Mexico in Sonora and Baja California at altitudes 290-1500 m. It grows on stony ground on flat hills and is associated with Yucca schidigera and various cacti species.

Nolina bigelovii is a member of the Section arborescentes. It is the most widespread species of the genus. Characteristic features are the smooth sheets with the fibrous leaf margins in the adult stage.

The first description was in 1857 as Dasylirion bigelovii by John Torrey. Sereno Watson she put 1879 in the genus Nolina. A synonym is Beaucarnea bigelovii ( Torr. ) Baker.
