Noregs MÃ¥llag

Noregs Mållag is a Norwegian club with headquarters in Oslo, which advocates in all areas of spoken language for the promotion of Nynorsk as a written language and use of dialect.

History

The club on 4 -5 was established. February 1906 in Christiania ( now Oslo ) under the name Norigs Maallag. This notation was retained until 1922. Today Nynorsk was at this time still Landsmaal ( language of the country / rural ). The renaming in Nynorsk ( New Norwegian) was carried out in 1929 by a decision of the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting. The main concern in the establishment was that one of the tests for artium, the Norwegian High School, may be written in Nynorsk ( Landsmaal ). Just a day after its foundation, the Venstre party, at its state convention, which also took place in Christiania, the proposal in its election manifesto on. 1907 a law was passed. Until the foundation of the association of the publishing Det Norske Samlaget acted as political voice of the speech activists.

Since the 1910s, emerged throughout the country local organizations Noregs Mållag. During the Second World War, many of these local associations were redissolved and the club chairman, Knut Markhus arrested. After the war the club was struggling especially with the fact that many Norwegian municipalities took off Nynorsk as the main form of language. Language policy of the club was divided on the question whether to hold on to the traditional form of Nynorsk or she should approach the Bokmål. The controversy led to the resignation in 1962 of the dedicated for a traditional spelling group Vestmannalaget.

In the 1970s, the association set for the sole use of Nynorsk as a written language. In recent years, advanced in the language policy of the club instead increases the view in the foreground to look Nynorsk as part of the linguistic diversity of the country.

Organization

Noregs Mållag organized at the local level in 20 provincial groups ( Fylkeslag ) and about 160 local groups. Once a year, a statewide meeting is held. The association counts including youth organization, Noregs Målungdom, about 12,000 members. Chairman since 2009, Håvard B. Øvregård.
