Norman Del Mar

Norman Rene Del Mar ( born July 31, 1919 in London, † February 6, 1994 in Bushey, Hertfordshire ) was a British conductor and music writer.

Life

Del Mar was at the Royal College of Music composition student of Constant Lambert and Ralph Vaughan Williams. 1947 to 1951 he assisted Thomas Beecham at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, in which he was initially occurred as a horn player. 1951 to 1954 he headed the London Philharmonic Orchestra and from 1954 to 1955 the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra. He also led the English Opera Group and taught until 1957 at the Guildhall School of Music. 1960 to 1965 he conducted the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and subsequently many other British orchestra. 1972 to 1990 he was professor of conducting at the Royal College of Music. 1974-1977 he worked next to the Royal Academy of Music, was from 1974 to 1977 Principal Conductor of the Academy of BBC, 1983-1985 Principal Guest Conductor of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta and conducted from 1985 to 1988 Del Mar the Danish Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.

The focus of his work as a conductor, which document 70 plate recordings, was on works of the late Romantic period, such as Edward Elgar and other British composers, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. In addition to his conducting activities in 1975 wrote to the Order of the British Empire excellent Del Mar several books, including a three-volume work on the life and music of Richard Strauss, an Anatomy of the Orchestra and a conductor, dedicated to the music of individual composers textbooks.

An approximately 5,000 comprehensive private collection of historic Del Mars 78s records located in the Hartley Library University of Southampton.

His son is the musicologist and conductor Jonathan Del Mar.
