Norman H. Boke

Norman Hill Boke (* 1913, † February 1996) was an American botanist, microbiologist and cactus specialist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Boke ".

Life and work

Norman Hill Boke received in 1934 his " undergraduate degree" at the University of South Dakota and made in 1936 at the University of Oklahoma for his Masters degree. He then went to the University of California where he received his doctorate in 1939 and received his PhD in Botany at Adriance Sherwood Foster. Before Boke was appointed in 1945 professor at the University of Oklahoma, he taught at the University of New Mexico and the Johns Hopkins University. In Oklahoma taught Boke plant anatomy, morphology of vascular plants as well as biological microscopy. He made ​​a major contribution to the study of the evolution and structure of the gynoecium of cactus.

From 1970 to 1975, Boke editor of the American Journal of Botany. He undertook numerous field studies and was a good judge of the Mexican flora.

Ehrentaxon

Leo Kladiwa and Franz Buxbaum named in his honor the genus Normanbokea from the plant the cactus family ( Cactaceae ), which is synonymous to the genus Turbinicarpus today.
