Norman Myers

Norman Myers CMG ( born August 24, 1934) is a British conservationist and expert in the field of biodiversity. He is the father of marathon runner Mara Yamauchi.

Life

Norman Myers was born in Clitheroe in Lancashire. He studied at Keble College, Oxford, graduating in 1958 with a BA in French and German. He worked then as a teacher and photographer in various African countries. In 1973 he obtained the degree of Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley.

Career

Myers is a professor at Green College, Oxford University and at the Said Business School and holds a teaching position at Duke University. He is a guest lecturer at Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, and Berkeley.

Work

He is the author of numerous books. Here, Myers wrote on environmental issues, such as the issue of overpopulation, poverty in developing countries, "over- consumption", unsustainable agriculture, climate warming and biosafety. In recent publications it comes to climate refugees, hunger and malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa and "new consumers in Developing and transition countries".

We have complied with his books about the mass extinction of species during the Holocene and the deforestation of tropical rainforests. His scientific work also contributed to the creation of the concept of biodiversity hotspots. He also worked on political ecology.

Various social scientists he was criticized for his views of neo- Malthusianism.
