Norman Raeben

Norman Räben (* 1901 in Russia; † 12 December 1978) was an American painter.

He was the youngest of six children of Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem, whose most famous character Tevye the milkman delivered the template for the musical Fiddler on the Roof. The artist name Räben is probably due to his surname Rabinovich.

Räben moved in 1914 with his family to New York City. He studied painting with Robert Henri, George Luks and John French Sloan, who all belonged to the Ashcan School. His studio is located on the 11th floor of Carnegie Hall.

Among his most famous students include Bob Dylan, Bernice Sokol Kramer, Carolyn mud and Rosalyn Jacobs.
