Normanby Island (Papua New Guinea)

Duau, also called " Normanby ", is a volcanic, about 850 km ², L- shaped island in the Pacific Ocean. It is the southernmost of the D' Entrecasteaux Islands, Milne Bay Province belonging to Papua New Guinea.

The island is located 16 km north-east of East Cape in New Guinea, from which it is separated by the Goshen Road, as well as a few kilometers south of Fergusson Island, from which it is separated by the Dawson Street. In the southeast the land mass rises to a maximum height of 1158 m above the sea, the nature of the surface is characterized by mountainous terrain in the southeast, along the coasts by shallow beaches and marshes. Capital of the island is Esa'ala in the north.

1873, the island was visited by the British Captain John Moresby, which she, 2nd Marquess of Normanby, named after the then Governor of Queensland George Phipps. Earlier it was reduced to Normanby gold, copra and lumber nowadays there are mainly obtained.

The 11 settlements in the west of the island belong to the Dobu Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area, which also includes the eastern part of the neighboring Fergusson Island. The eastern part of Normanby Island with the remaining 30 settlements is the Duau Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area.
