North American Electric Reliability Corporation

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation ( NERC ) is a North American non-profit organization based in Princeton, New Jersey, which is responsible for the coordination of electric power systems in North America. It was on 1 January 2007 as the successor organization founded in 1968, the North American Electric Reliability Council, also under the abbreviation NERC known, was founded.

The purpose of the NERC is operator across ensuring the electrical power supply. She is responsible for coordinating the national electricity trading and for the technical specifications for the exchange of energy between different North American network operators. The spatial coordination area includes several interconnected networks in the United States, Canada and northern Baja California in Mexico. The NERC is comparable to the Union for the Co -ordination of Transmission of Electricity ( UTCE ) in Europe, now ENTSO -E in their function.

Network areas

The national electricity grids in North America are characterized by several large, mutually asynchronous interconnections, in English, these areas are referred to as the Interconnection. Within an Interconnection work normally several energy companies. Asynchronous in this context means that the mains frequency of 60 Hz in the entire North American region, although nominally equal, but the individual operated with three-phase AC networks can not be connected directly because of technical control deviations.

Within the individual interconnected networks of electrical energy exchange between individual providers and consumers can technically relatively simple, for example by means of overhead lines in the form of high-voltage systems, done. Between different power networks of exchange, however, is limited and technically complex, for example by means of high -voltage direct current (HVDC ) possible.

The five largest electrical interconnections in the remit of NERC in North America are:

  • The two large interconnected networks Eastern Interconnection (in the graphic mehrfärbig ) Florida Reliability Coordinating Council ( FRCC )
  • Midwest Reliability Organization ( MRO)
  • ReliabilityFirst Corporation ( RFC)
  • SERC Reliability Corporation ( SERC )
  • Southwest Power Pool, RE (SPP )
  • Western Electricity Coordinating Council ( WECC )
  • Quebec Interconnection Northeast Power Coordinating Council ( NPCC )
  • Texas Reliability Entity ( TRE)
  • Alaskan System Coordination Council ( ASCC ), affiliated company

The two networks of the Alaska Interconnection own as a distinctive feature no electrical connection to adjacent interconnected networks and are so-called isolated networks.
