North Cape, New Zealand

The North Cape is located in the extreme northeast of the Aupouri Peninsula, the northern spur of the North Auckland Peninsula of the North Island of New Zealand. Its north-eastern tip located 30 km east of the north-western tip of the peninsula at Cape Reinga.

The name was used in the past for more or less large areas. Sometimes just said of the Māori Otou chapter is meant peaking over Murimotu Iceland, sometimes the eastern tip of Murimotu Iceland. It is also used for the entire area, 5 km from west to Murimotu Kerr Point ( Ngatuatata ) extends and includes the Surville Cliffs. These are the northernmost point of the main islands of New Zealand and are 3 km further north than the often with this title gave Cape Reinga. The article follows this extended terms " North Cape ".

The North Cape was once a towering out of the sea volcano. Sand deposits of the sea formed by the time a tombolo, which forms the Waikuku Flat today. This linked the volcanic island with the Aupouri Peninsula. Today The former island and the plane form the North Cape Peninsula.

A large part of the area is part of the protected area North Cape Scientific Reserve, which serves to protect the unique flora and fauna of the area. Some species are found only on the cliffs of Surville Cliffs. 2000 electric fence was erected to keep out possums, feral pigs and horses from the field. The area is not accessible to the public and is managed by the Department of Conservation (DoC ).

A large part of Waikuku Flat is another reserve of the DoC, Mokaikai Scenic Reserve that extends to the south Parengarenga Harbour. This preserve is open to the public, but accessible by land only through ownership of Māori, one needs therefore for the passage of a permit by the appropriate management of Māori. Another strip Māori land lies between the Mokaikai Reserve and the North Cape reserve. This strip includes the southern part of the North Cape and the northern edge of the Waikuku Flat. It extends from Kerr Point and the north end of Tom Bowling Bay in the northeast to Tokatoka Point on the west coast.
