North Island, Seychelles

North Iceland (also Île du Nord) is 2.01 km ², the ninth largest island of the Inner Seychelles. It is located about five kilometers north of Iceland silhouette and about 32 km northwest of Mahé, the main island of the Seychelles. Unlike the geographic location suggests the island as the adjacent Silhouette Island is also part of the administrative district of La Digue and Inner Islands and is thus managed by the island of La Digue.

2003, the island was converted into a private vacation club North Iceland lodge with eleven guesthouses.

Geology

Geologic differ North Iceland and silhouette of the other islands of the Inner Seychelles. Both consist of about 63 million years old syenite volcanic origin, while the granite of Mahé, Praslin and is about 650 million years old.

History

North Iceland was the first Seychelles Island, which was visited by Europeans. Alexander Sharpeigh reported in 1609 the British East India Company of a large colony of giant tortoises.

Between 1826 and the 1970s, the island of Réunion Beaufond family from which she used as a plantation for fruit and spices belonged. Next guano, fish oil and copra were exported. After the sale of the plantation spread on the island of unused foreign animals and plants.
