Nortia

Nortia is an Etruscan goddess.

Presumably, the idea of Nortia corresponded approximately to the idea of Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune. Benjamin Hederich it is however the same with Pomona. In Rome Nortia had probably not have its own cult, but every year a nail was hammered into their temple in Volsinii. The same custom existed in Rome; which a nail was driven into the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus always on the Ides of September, as Livy reports. The historian says that this practice constitutes a kind of calendar; Today you go but rather assume that the nails do not count the years served, but had an apotropaic effect.

To Nortias work as goddess of fortune see Martianus Capella 1, 88, and Schol. Iuv. 10, 74; Varro expresses about the non-existent cult in Rome in Tert. apol. 24

In the Tuscan Tell Nortia lives on as the Koboldin of Norcia.
