Norwegian Baptist Union

The Norwegian Baptist Union (NBU ) (Det Norske Baptistsamfunn; actually literally: The Norwegian Baptist Community ) is a national Confederation of Norwegian Baptists. He is before nallem responsible for tasks beyond the capability of autonomous member communities. These include the outer and inner mission, diakonia, and the education and training of full-time and volunteer staff.

History

Enoch Richard Haftorsen Svee, a young Norwegian, who was supported by American Baptists in 1842 came back and preached in Norway, but died before churches were planted. The first Baptist church in Norway in 1862 in Skien by Frederick Ludvig Rymker, a former Danish mission facing sailors founded. The Baptists established regional groupings. The First (South) was founded in 1872, North and West followed in 1877. In 1878, 13 representatives from 8 churches the Norwegian Baptist Union, the first Secretary-General Janne M. Sjödahl was. The Baptische Missionary Society England supported the work in Norway. As this link was broken, they asked for the support of the American Baptist Missionary Society and got them also. 1910 a theological seminary was founded in 1922, a youth organization and a university in 1958.

Organization and statistics

The Baptist Union is a member of the European- Baptischen Federation, and of the Baptist World Alliance. According to our own sources, there were in 2003 4971 members in 69 congregations.

In addition to the communities united in the Norwegian Baptist Union there are two independent Baptist churches, but who cooperate with the World Association of Baptists. Together they have around 75 members.
