Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica (Ottawa)

The Basilique - Cathédrale Notre- Dame d' Ottawa is the oldest church in Ottawa and the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa. The church is located on Sussex Drive in the Lower Town neighborhood, close to the National Gallery of Canada east of the city center. The building is dominated by the twin-tower facade. Your tips are - as is typical for Eastern Canada - coated with silver metal. Located between the towers on the edge of the roof of the nave is a gilded statue of the Madonna.

The present church replaced a small wooden church from 1832. It was demolished in 1841 in favor of the larger church. They were designed by a native of the region builders Antoine Robillard and Father Cannon in the neoclassical style. Construction work on the nave were completed in 1844, 1846 was the main structure. The spiers, however, were not completed until 1866. Pope Leo XIII. rose in 1879 the church because of its significant history and its rich features in the status of a basilica. The church was extensively renovated and restored in the 1990s. The service is held both in English and in French.
