Notre-Dame Street

The Rue Notre -Dame (English Our Lady Street ) is a major street in Montreal. It begins in the arrondissement of Lachine on the Autoroute 20 then passes through the eastern part of the city center and the old town (Vieux -Montreal ) and then follows the shore of the St. Lawrence River to the northern tip of the Ile de Montréal, where she is 35 kilometers ends. The Boulevard Saint -Laurent, the road splits into a western and an eastern part.

History

At the beginning of the 1670s was the Sulpizianerorden who then possessed the basic rule of the island, build a parish church. On this occasion, the street grid of the fledgling city should be redefined. François Dollier de Casson, local head of the Order, surveyed in 1672 along with the surveyor Bénigne Basset new streets and laid down their names. The first was the Rue Notre -Dame, which developed subsequently to the main axis of the Old Town.

The Rue Notre -Dame was initially limited to the section between the Rue de Bonsecours and Rue McGill. As part of the demolition of the Montreal city walls (1804-1810) it was connected to the Rue Saint -Joseph in the southwest and Rue Sainte -Marie in the Northeast. After a City Council decision of 1882, the entire stretch of road was the single name Rue Notre -Dame. It also agreed with the course of 1737 opened Chemin du Roy, a road between the cities of Montreal and Quebec City, agreed.

Structures

In the old town, the Rue Notre -Dame happened numerous important buildings. They include the Hôtel de Ville, the Palais de Justice, the Château Ramezay, the Basilica Notre- Dame de Montréal, the Vieux Séminaire de Saint- Sulpice Church and the George -Étienne Cartier House, the Tour de la Banque Royale and Place d'Armes. North of the city center it takes you past the Molson Brewery, the Port of Montreal and the Windmill Pointe- aux- Trembles.

Other road

In the western and central part of the Rue Saint -Jacques is parallel to the Rue Notre -Dame. Major cross streets are among others the Rue Guy, rue Peel, Rue University, Rue McGill Boulevard Saint -Laurent, Rue Saint -Denis, the Boulevard Pie -IX, Viau Boulevard and Autoroute 25
