Nueva Palmira is a city in southwestern Uruguay.

Geography

The city is located on the territory of the Department of Colonia on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River, which also forms the border to Argentina, as well as over the estuary of the Río Paraná. It is located northwest of the city Carmelo. On the northern border of the city, which is formed from the Arroyo del Sauce, the boundary runs to the Department of Soriano. The distance to the southeast, the state capital Montevideo is about 280 km.

History

The city was founded on October 26, 1831 by Felipe Santiago Torres Leiva. In the 1990s, the port of Nueva Palmira Bolivia has been made available, but bolivianischerseits never used. Under the President Evo Morales ( Bolivia) and Tabaré Vazquez (Uruguay ) the agreement of free use has been renewed. The reigning Uruguayan President José "Pepe" Mujica said in 2010: "We have offered Bolivia access to the Atlantic. " Nueva Palmira is now considered a Bolivian " access to the sea ".

Economy

Due to its strategic location in the delta of the rivers Río Uruguay and Paraná River and its transition into the Río de la Plata, the city has an important port in the region.

Population

With a population of 9,857 (as of 2011), of which 4,852 male and 5,005 female population, it is one of the larger towns within the department.
