Carmelo is a city in southwestern Uruguay.

Geography

Carmelo is in the area of the Department of Colonia in its sector 6 at the mouth of Arroyo de las Vacas, at the northern, right bank, the city is located in the Río de la Plata. At the Rio de la Plata - side, west facing extends the Paraná Delta. The distance to the southeast, Carmelo Departamento Capital Colonia is 75 km, while the capital Montevideo is located some 235 kilometers to the east. Located northwest of Carmelo are the place Zagarzazú and the town of Nueva Palmira.

History

The city was founded on February 12, 1816 José Gervasio Artigas. On August 17, 1920 was due to the Ley no. 7257 the classification Carmelos as Ciudad (city).

Traffic
