Nuno Gomes

Nuno Gomes [ nunu gomɯʃ ] ( born July 5, 1976 in Amarante, Porto district; actually Nuno Miguel Soares Pereira Ribeiro ) is a Portuguese football player.

Career

Association

At the age of eleven, he began his career in the talent school Boavista Porto. Nuno Gomes was considered one of the great young talents of Portugal. He went through all the youth teams of his country and was with the U-18 European champion selection. With the U- 21 of the Portuguese took part in the 1996 Olympic Games. His debut in the national team celebrated Nuno Gomes on 24 January 1996 at the age of 19, against France.

After Euro 2000 Gomes moved from Benfica, for whom he played since the 1997/98 season, for a transfer fee of 17 million euros to Fiorentina. However, he did not succeed, Gabriel Batistuta, who had left the club to replace. In his two years in Italy, he scored only 16 goals and was sold at the end of the season 2001/ 02 back to Benfica. After his contract was not renewed in July 2011 at Benfica, he a free transfer to SC Braga where he signed a one year contract.

For the season 2012/13 Nuno Gomes goes to England to Blackburn Rovers. He signed a two-year contract.

National

Gomes participated in the Euro 2000, the 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004, the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008. At the 2006 World Cup, he scored in the match for third place against Germany after coming on Portugal's only goal of the encounter. In total he spent at the 2006 World Cup only a mid-term in the square, still he managed to finish his account the World Cup with a goal. Following the resignation of Luís Figo after the 2006 World Cup was Nuno Gomes captain of the Portuguese national team. At Euro 2008, he scored against Germany in the quarter-finals the score back to 1:2 ( Full 2:3 ), but the departure of the Portuguese could not prevent.

Private

Nuno Gomes bears his stage name in honor of the former striker of FC Porto, Fernando Gomes. He is married to his second wife and has a daughter. His current wife is called Patricia Aguilar and has worked as a lawyer in Lisbon.
