Nurak

Norak ( Tajik Норак / نارک; Russian Нурек ) is a city in the Khatlon province of Tajikistan.

Geography

Norak is located on the Central Asian river Vakhsh and is located 885 meters above the sea level. The capital Dushanbe is located 70 kilometers southeast. A census of 2000, according to 19,000 people lived in Norak. In 2008, the population was estimated at 18,844.

The city was founded in 1960 as a result of the start of construction of the Nurek dam, which was completed in 1980.

About seven kilometers south of Norak is the monitoring station Okno the Russian Space Forces.
