Ny Kirke

The Ny Kirke, Danish for New Church, is a round church in Nyker on the Danish island of Bornholm. It dates from the 12th century. Among the four round churches of Bornholm, the Østerlars Kirke, Ols Kirke and Nylars Kirke, she is considered the youngest and with only two floors, the smallest church. Like the other round churches it was built as a fortified church with a flat plank roof as a defense platform. The conical roof like two outer retaining walls was adopted in the late Middle Ages.

The free-standing bell tower is located within the cemetery grounds. Of the two bells of the tower was a cast in Lübeck, in the time of Bornholm in 1500 was one of Lübeck.

The church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark.

Church interior

The interior of the church ( the round ship) is dominated by the central pillar that holds the ceiling and roof loads to the outer wall. On it are the original murals that are still in good condition. The pulpit is provided with carvings on Biblical scenes that were created by the sculptor Heinrich flensburgischen Ringerink. There is an hour glass ( four hourglasses ) from 1690, which is to remind us of the transience of life over the pulpit. On the inner wall of the chancel a large consecration cross in red paint can be seen. At the Rotunda, the choir joins with the altar and baptismal font.

In the lobby there is a rune stone, a grave stone and a wooden plate with coins. The grave stone shows a relief of Christ's resurrection as well as an inscription in memory of the priest Jens Nilson, who died in March 1648. The wood panel shows copies of old coins ( 1286-1815 ), which were found during restoration work of the Church around 1960 in the floor of the church.
