O. Timothy O'Meara

Onorato Timothy O'Meara ( born January 29, 1928 in Cape Town ) is an American mathematician who deals with number theory and algebra.

O'Meara studied at the University of Cape Town and in 1953 received his doctorate from Princeton University with Emil Artin ( Quadratic forms over local fields ). In 1957/58 and 1961 he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study. He taught at Princeton, the University of Otago and in 1962 at the University of Notre Dame. He was there twice Executive Board of the Faculty and Professor of Mathematics from 1976 Kenna. 1978 to 1996 he was Provost of the University.

It deals with algebraic number theory, linear groups and number theory, quadratic forms, about which he wrote a standard work. This also includes its integer classification of quadratic forms over local fields. In the 1960s and 1970s he worked on isomorphisms between classical groups over fields and later on integrity rings.

The math library of the University of Notre Dame is named after him.

1960 to 1963 he was a Sloan Fellow. In 1978, he was Professor Carl Friedrich Gauss in Göttingen. In 1991 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

His doctoral Alexander J. Hahn heard.
