The Oberfrauenwald is a wooded mountain in the southern Bavarian Forest, between the towns of Forest and Hauzenberg churches, the county boundary runs through its 945 m high summit between Passau ( its highest point it is) and Freyung -Grafenau.

On the Oberfrauenwald is since 2004 an observation tower that allows a comprehensive panorama on all sides. Since then, the mountain is often visited in the summer. The ascent is via a footpath from the village Oberfrauenwald or - the shorter version - from the mountain rescue hut parking lot 15 minutes from the summit possible. In the winter months, is located on the northern slopes of the Oberfrauenwald a smaller ski area. The tower also serves as an antenna carrier. On the roof of a radio antenna system is installed, the radio, supplies the surrounding rural areas with WiMAX, broadband Internet.

The name Oberfrauenwald goes back to the nunnery Niedernburg in Passau. In 1010 the monastery Niedernburg by Emperor Henry II to the imperial immediacy was awarded a part of the royal forest between the Danube and North Bohemia. This forest area has since been referred to as " forest wife ". The area was 1161-1220 for high pin Passau Passau with the bishops as secular and spiritual Lord and remained there until the secularization in 1803.
